Adventure challenge is an activity that was initially run as the Fieldfare Kielder Challenge in the 1990's at this time the challenge stood alone as the first truly inclusive challenge for children with and without additional needs. Having seen the amazing impact of the challenge on participants we looked at how this could be rolled out to involve more children and so began our own challenge event. The Fieldfare Trust ran challenge days with 4 teams but we knew we could increase this by using leaders with and without additional needs to support the event and by designing game that could be run with multiple teams.

With the Fieldfare Trust closing we decided to keep the Challenge going with our format and have run it inviting teams from across the County for the last 5 years. 1000's of children have been involved in our Challenge over the years and this school years has seen the Challenge develop capacity by involving the counties School Games Organisers. Secondary and Primary events will be run this year across the County and a case study will be completed in July 2023 with resources produced to enable the further roll out of the Challenge to schools.'

Adventure challenge is now an inclusive outdoor team challenge for groups of 8 young people with and without additional needs. Team make up is 4 children with additional needs and 4 without.

Teams are given a range of problems to solve from finding alien life form or carrying acid rain to transporting dolphin urine by the use of specially designed helmets. Teams are scored on their teamwork through planning, doing and evaluating their activity together.

The aim of the day is to give children a fun, inclusive team day where everyone plays an equal part in their team's success. Staff are asked to monitor their own teams' wellbeing but will have to wear the naughty ears if they try to become a team member and tell their team what to do!!
